Why We Love To Mix Metals

We are currently working with a general contractor who purchased a 1950s home in a higher-end neighborhood. He gutted the interior and plans to resell the home after it’s refinished. In a recent design meeting, this contractor was surprised that we chose to mix metals in almost every space in the home. He told us he usually chooses one finish and uses it everywhere.

This GC is not alone. We often get pushback from clients when we suggest mixing up finishes. People think by using the same finish on all metals, their space will look more pulled together.

We strongly disagree. And here’s why…

Choosing beautiful, but different finishes adds depth, interest, and personality to your space. If a room has, for example, all chrome hardware, it can feel flat and one-dimensional. Instead, if you pair a polished chrome faucet with copper lights and brushed satin hardware (above), your kitchen instantly looks sophisticated and unique.

We love lots of metal combinations, but we’re particularly fond of brass and black (above), and brass and nickel (below). They each have warm undertones that work well together.

Mixing metals isn’t just about aesthetics, though. It’s about creating a space that feels intentional and thoughtfully designed. It’s about pushing boundaries and not settling for the ordinary. And if you’re reading this, I’m guessing you don’t want ordinary, right!? J

Mixing metals shows confidence and gives your home a curated feel. It shows you’re not afraid to play by your own rules. And it looks as if every piece was handpicked over time.

If you’re ready to give your home an update, we think mixing metals is a design trick that’s worth its weight in gold (and brass, and bronze…).  ;-)

Don’t be afraid to mix and match. Play with different finishes and see how they complement each other. Remember, the goal is to create a space that feels dynamic, layered, and personal.

Until next month!
